Ana Maria Diaz-Collazos, a.k.a. Ana, is a 38-year old from Colombia who lives in Mexico City and has been writing since she was 10 years old. In the last 20 years, Ana has written six books for children, two novels for adults and a collection of poetry. In her latest work, Los fantasmas del colegio [School Spirits], Ana tries to bring back the public school in a time when private schools have become too attractive an option in many parts of Latin America. The book is a compilation of different data and studies that demonstrate just how much harm private schools are causing when they don't have to take into account the greater good or give anything back to society. Ana's first book was published when she was 16 inside Colombia: "El diccionario de los abuelos" (The Dictionary of Grandparents), which is an alphabetical presentation of names created by old people from different regions in Colombia. That book generated a series of books for children and teenagers about their grandparents. Ana's first book written in Mexico was "Los fantasmas del colegio", published in 2006 by Ivrea. The book is an essay, a compilation of articles and data that demonstrate the damage private schools deal to society. Through this book, Ana wants to bring back the public school as the center for social integration and critical thinking skills development. She also stresses on bringing back traditional values such as discipline, respect and responsibility for oneself as well as the integral role public schools can play in society.
